On November 11th, 2004 the death of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat was announced to the world. Although widely viewed as a corrupt politician, Arafat was loved dearly for the solidarity he brought to the Palestinian people and his unwillingness to bend on the negotiation of two issues: the right of return for all Palestinian refugees and East Jerusalem as the future capital of an independent Palestinian state. A majority of the local population suspects he was poisoned, the purposed transgressor ranging from Israeli forces to an aide within the Palestinian government. To date investigations have been inconclusive. Tens of thousands of mourners turned up on the day of the funeral to wish farewell to their controversial leader.
